"In order to build a prosperous and strong nation - it was imperative for independent India to create a solid foundation of science and technology by establishing large scale science and engineering educational institutions for human resources on the one hand and on the other advanced scientific research facilities in a cross-section of fields from agriculture to medical research, atomic energy even space technology so that pressing problems that plagued our nation from low agricultural and food production, to health facilities, the building of infrastructure for irrigation, sanitation, transport, electricity, the defence could be built in India. So in this episode of Science for a Self Reliant India, we look at the building of India’s institutions from CSIR, IIT’s and other temples of science between 1947 and the early 1970’. We also delve into the Scientific Policy Resolution of 1958 that shaped India’s science programmes for years to come and we delve into the legacy of some of India’s scientific doyens like Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar, Homi Jehangir Bhabha, Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, J.C Ghosh Vikram Sarabhai, Satish Dhawan."
