ST Radar Facility at ARIES (H)

Extreme weather conditions can frequently result in natural disasters in the Himalayan region. Therefore accurate weather prediction is necessary for effective disaster risk management, which demands a correct understanding of various atmospheric parameters and understanding any deviation from their regular patterns. Radars are an excellent and indispensable experimental tool to measure various atmospheric parameters used for basic atmospheric research, weather forecasting, and disaster management. In this context, the Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES), Nainital has set up a state-of-the-art Stratosphere-Tropospheric (ST) Radar in the central Himalayas for monitoring the wind and understand the dynamics in the lower atmosphere. The radar has an innovative design to overcome the scarcity of flat space in the hilly terrain. The entire system has been developed in-house, illustrating India's self-reliance in science and making it a shining example of the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' vision.
