Professor M Vijayan: Pioneering Structural Biologist (E)

"Prof. Vijayan pioneered biological macromolecular crystallography research in India. He made significant contributions to the study of amino acids, proteins and macromolecules. He has also contributed to the area of structure and interactions of mycobacterial proteins and supramolecular association with reference to chemical evolution and the origin of life. He was elected Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore, National Academy of Sciences (India), Allahabad, and the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS). He was the President of the Indian National Science Academy from 2007 to 2010. He earned many honours, including Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, Ranbaxy Award, OP Bhasin Award, G N Ramachandran Medal, and also the first GN Ramachandran Medal by Indian Science Congress Association. He was awarded Padma Shri in 2004. "
