From Cells and Molecules to Products (E)

A close look at how bench level ideas get translated into tangible products. Many scientific and technological developments can be translated into valuable products, but not all scientists and start up’s have that acumen to become successful companies. Meet entrepreneurs who left cozy jobs to take on the risky technology development path. In the area of cellular and molecular biology, there is one Department of Biotechnology supported unit that helps translate good science into good products. The Centre for Cellular and Molecular Platforms (C-CAMP), Bengaluru has been very successful during the Covid-19 pandemic to help get diagnostics, masks, kits off the ground. Trained at the Wharton School of Management Dr Taslimarif Saiyed CEO of C-CAMP, has been able to hand hold many companies to make successful products. His hands on training in biotechnology has helped him lead the development. C-CAMP helped ramp up 78 diagnostic kits, 73 reagents this helped reduce the price of an RT PCR test from Rs 4500 per test in March 2020 to about Rs 700 today. Through this work C CAMP raised about Rs 35 crores of funds through about 1100 Indian innovations. Translating Saraswati to Lakshmi is showcased here.
