An analysis of the first data obtained from the 3.6 m optical telescope at the Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences at Devasthal has revealed unexpected kilonova emission in a long-period gamma-ray burst. On December 11, 2021, astronomers observed first-of-its-kind celestial event, detecting a high-energy light burst from the outskirts of the Milky Way, located approximately 1 billion light-years away.
