Dr. S. Somanath (E)
On 14th January 2022, Dr K Sivan completed his extended term as the Chairman of ISRO. Now, eminent rocket scientist Dr S Somanath has succeeded Dr K Sivan as the new chairman of the Indian space agency. Dr. Somanath was appointed as the Secretary of the Department of Space and Chairman of the Space Commission on the 12th of January, for the next three years. Born in 1963, Dr. S. Somnath is an expert in many disciplines including launch vehicle design. At the time of his appointment, he was serving as the director of the Vikram Sarabhai Space Center (VSSC) in Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram. He was also a team leader for the Integration of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) during the early phases of his career.
