"The Brick Angle - Building Blocks of Bharat Series (E) We start our exploration of different materials used for construction with brick - one of the oldest known building materials in the world - dating back to 7000BCE. We explore the evolution and advantages of building with bricks. Our travels start with the Indus Valley and the use of mud and clay bricks in places like Mehragarh. We then head to the Chaukhandi Stupa - one of the first monuments you see in Sarnath. Next up - the Bhitargaon Temple built by the Guptas in the 5th Century. It is one of the oldest remaining brick/terracotta Hindu shrine. We focus on the science behind the various processes involved in the making of bricks, the sizes of bricks and different bonds in the laying of bricks. We will also explore buildings that were made of brick with stone cladding like the Taj Mahal. "
