Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis is considered the father of modern statistics in India. He founded the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), shaped the Planning Commission, and pioneered large-scale surveys. June 29 is observed as National Statistics Day to commemorate his birthday. His most important contributions are related to large-scale sample surveys.
