The earth's protective ozone layer had been thinning since the late 1970s. Scientists raised the alarm and ozone-depleting chemicals were phased out worldwide. According to the United Nations Scientific Assessment Report (UNSAR) released last year, these efforts have shown results and the ozone layer is finally healing. However, the use of hydrofluorocarbons or HFCs as refrigerants and coolants in refrigerators and air conditioners has been a significant concern lately.
