Newly identified tectonically active zone in Himalayas (E)

Scientists from the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, an autonomous institute of the DST based in Dehradun, have gained new knowledge about the ‘Indus Suture Zone’ in the Ladakh region, which was thought to be a locked or tectonically in-active area. A new study carried out by the Institute indicates that this zone has been active since thousands of years and this finding is likely to impact not only the earthquake study but also our understanding regarding the evolution of mountain chains like Himalayas.
