Over 80% of the global merchandise trade and 90% of India’s international cargo volume for imports and exports are transported via the sea routes.India is the world's 16th largest marine country and the ports and shipping industry is an indispensable part of trade and commerce. With India’s growing exports as well as increasing domestic demand and India’s ambition to become a 5 trillion dollar economy its imperative to modernise the port infrastructure as well as connect it with hi end systems and software for global connectivity. A roadmap has been prepared by the Government of India with initiatives like Sagarmala for modernising India ports. The idea is to lay a strong foundation of advanced and cutting edge technologies to increase the capacity of Indian ports up to 3300 Million Tonnes Per Annum by 2025 to cater to the growing cargo traffic. Major strides have been taken at Indian ports towards the digitization of key export import processes by minimising man to man interaction and paperwork. Radio Frequency Identification Device or RFID solution has been implemented at all major ports to enable seamless movement of traffic across port gates, including substantial reductions in documentation checks. Upgradation and integration with recent container tracking technologies like logistics data services are also deployed to ease real time tracking and Advanced container scanning systems for scanning containers without opening or unloading. In our last episode we visited the Shyamaprasad Mukherjee Port in Kolkata and have seen how science and technology helps in navigation and safe passage of the vessels in this unique riverine Port. So in this episode we will continue our journey by exploring the history of India’s oldest port and will bring to you the details of the latest technologies being implemented at different docks like Container tracking and scanning for smooth movement of containers in and out of the port. One of its kind lock gate facility for significantly reducing the turnaround time of vessels and increasing the efficiency of ports resulting in profits. We will also take a look at the other facilities provided by the Shyamaprasad Mukherjee port and their innovative way of handling Cape size vessels on a riverine port.
