How can acoustics technology save Ganges dolphins? (E)

The Ganges River Dolphins are top predators in the freshwater ecosystems. If cut off from the food chain, the whole ecosystem can collapse. Nevertheless, their numbers are dwindling and we need better strategies to conserve this endangered species. Team from IIT Delhi, in collaboration with scientists from Japan have developed a sonar monitoring system to track the underwater activities of these dolphins. Why was a sonar system needed? The dolphins are essentially blind and the water in Ganges is muddy. The challenge to survey the dolphins calls for measures that do not rely on optical images. Watch this special documentary to know how water acoustics and sonar systems can come to the rescue. Learn about ultrasonic sounds and much more.
