More than half of India’s geographical region is earthquake-prone and the country has faced these disasters quite often. Keeping this in view, the National Earthquake Research Institute under the Ministry of Earth Sciences was established. The main function of the institute is to keep watch on Earthquake and to develop earthquake communication systems. Structures cause a lot of harm so for mitigation purpose, the IITs are constantly working to develop earthquake-resistant structures. Institute like National Earthquake Research Institute, Gandhinagar is working on techniques of Micro-zonation and detection of faults. In addition, awareness programmes for the public are organized for disaster management.
