Atal Tunnel, Rohtang: An Engineering Marvel (E)
Taming Tough Terrains is not easy. Making a tunnel through the fragile Himalayas is not easy, but India has made an engineering marvel, the nearly 9 km long Atal Tunnel at Rohtang made at cost of Rs 3200 crores is considered and engineering masterpiece and today it is the longest tunnel in the world above an altitude of 3000 meters. Made through a fragile mountain range the tunnel reduces the distance between Manali and Leh by 46 kilometres. This strategic tunnel provides all weather connectivity to the Lahaul and Spiti Valley. Boring a tunnel through Himalayas with very limited working time with persistent snow bound conditions has been a big achievement.
